Master Sergeant
in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. Only one player missed practice today—linebacker Andre Smith Jarius Wright Jersey , and he’s the only one listed as out on today’s injury report. This is good news for the Panthers. The interesting thing will be how Ron Rivera decides who is inactive for the game on Sunday since mostly everyone is healthy. There are a few players he would like to see in action, though:Hopefully this means that Curtis Samuel will be part of the ‘game plan and scheme’ this week... I guess we’ll find out on Sunday. Here’s today’s full injury report:Panthers injury reportOutLB Andre Smith (hamstring)DoubtfulNoneQuestionableNonePractice StatusDid not participate in practice = 0% of a player’s normal repetitionsLimited participation in practice = Less than 100% of a player’s normal repetitionsFull participation in practice = 100% of a player’s normal repetitionsGame StatusOut = Player will not playDoubtful = Player unlikely to playQuestionable = Uncertain if player will play Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the Hog Molly Report, where winning in the trenches is all that matters. Before we begin, we open with the reciting of our usual motto:In the spirit of Mr. Gettleman’s words (regardless of him having moved on) and the philosophy of building a team from the inside out, my goal will be to watch the hog mollies each game during the season and give them a grade based on their performance. This week we will look at the incredible come from behind victory over the Philadelphia Eagles where the Panthers managed to snatch victory from the jaws of nearly certain defeat, and rose to 4-2 on the season. This game was rough on the offensive line for the most part, but both lines did both come together when it counted to make for a glorious outcome.Offensive Hog MolliesYards per Carry: 7.1, season: 5.2 (1st, NFL)Yards per Play: 6.6, season: 5.8 (12th, NFL)Sacks allowed: 2, season: 10 (T-5th, NFL)Third downs converted: 5 of 11 or 45%, season: 39% (17th, NFL)Rating: 3 out of 5 Malcontent MolliesThe Carolina Panthers make it really hard to grade them by the numbers. For three quarters, those stats above are total lies, as the offensive line gave up significant pressure and the offense as a whole couldn’t help themselves but march forward only then to immediately take several steps back. The team managed to accomplish an entire game’s worth of positives in a single quarter , but our duty is to talk about the entire game. Here is the pressure count on the day:Here’s a brief sack report:1st Sack: Q1 1:24, 2nd & 10, CAR 41 - Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett straight up obliterates Chris Clark and makes this sack look incredibly easy. Not much more to say than that.2nd Sack: Q2 4:56, 1st & 10, PHI 26 - Cam sacked himself by tripping over a man laying on the ground. If he runs any other direction, he probably gets another big gain. Can’t credit any lineman on that one, and frankly, Cam never saw that guy either because he’s looking downfield. Poop happens sometimes. The story on the Panthers offense continues to be the same as it always has, Cam Newton is dangerous (like many quarterbacks) if you give him time. Despite some odd play calls, the team probably gets more points throughout the game with a little better work up front. Chris Clark had his second bad game in a row, and I think I’m ready to make a ruling on him. Matt Kalil is better, all things equal, but based on what Matt Kalil gets paid... Clark is the better value. To that end, we have Matt Kalil under contract, that isn’t going anywhere, he should probably start once healthy. Guard play continues to be excellent, and three pressures from Ryan Kalil working on Fletcher Cox could have been way worse. Taylor Moton surrendered a pair of pressures Greg Van Roten Color Rush Jersey , his highest total of the season, but there is still no doubt this kid is a stud.Defensive Hog MolliesYards per Carry: 2.4, season: 4.2 (T-12th, NFL)Yards per Play: 5.6, season: 5.9 (24th, NFL)Sacks given: 4, season: 16 (T-18th, NFL)Third down allowed %: 3 of 12 or 25%, season: 33% (4th, NFL)Rating: 4 out of 5 Malevolent MolliesHolding an offense with explosive potential like the Eagles to a seventeen point total is a good day, and the unit was particularly good against the run. While there were a couple chunk runs, they were able to secure outright stuffs or losses on several occasions. Eric Washington promised better gap control this week and the front seven delivered. Consistent pressure remains an issue, as the unit was stymied on several big plays through the air. Corey Clement was completely stuffed, as was Wendell Smallwood with just a few’d like to see the team consider a trade with a struggling team to see if they can prop up this pass rush a bit. A good edge rusher would really make this team a serious contender, and would help spell Julius Peppers. The Jacksonville Jaguars look like a good target to me, particularly Calais Campbell. There are several reasons this trade would make sense, look for me to outline those in a separate article.Hopefully the injury to Mario Addison is not serious enough to keep him out of any games , as right now he is by far the most effective pass rusher on the team. He had two sacks on Sunday, even though one was a gift on a Carson Wentz fumble. Julius Peppers again showed up at a key moment, securing the game on a Wentz sack. This week the interior line rotation didn't rotate back to bad, as both the tackle pairings proved effective. I’d still like to see more out of Dontari Poe, he’s doing his job, but he’s not the impact player we expected so far. Efe Obada was a non factor in this contest, though his development is very much a work in progress.Hog Molly of the Week: Greg Van RotenIn the tradition of the Panthers being able to take cast offs at guard and turn them into major factors, Greg Van Roten seems to be the next player in the line of tradition. So far this season, we haven’t noticed the drop off without Andrew Norwell, who I’m sure is not having quite as much fun down in Jacksonville. Van Roten has clearly responded to coaching, as his technique has improved substantially at the point of attack, and his pass blocking split has tightened up as well. If he can get stronger, he’ll turn out to be a hell of a player. Time on the field is only going to make him better.
